III MIL & Global Understanding Conference. Cairo 2026

Peace for All

Cairo, Egypt | 27–29 April 2026

Cairo will once again become a global meeting point for dialogue on media, technology, and peace with the celebration of the III MIL & Global Understanding Conference 2026. Conceived as a consolidated milestone in an ongoing international process, the conference strengthens Media and Information Literacy (MIL) as a strategic pillar for peacebuilding, intercultural dialogue, democratic resilience, and inclusive digital transformation.

Building on the 2024 Cairo Conference, which endorsed the Declaration for Global Understanding and Peace, and the 2025 Barcelona Conference, which advanced the MIL Action Agenda, the 2026 edition reaffirms a shared commitment among institutions and partners worldwide. At its core is a clear objective: to position MIL and Artificial Intelligence (AI) as enabling tools for global understanding, sustainable development, and human-centred digital ecosystems grounded in ethical innovation and responsible governance.

Organized by the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT) and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), in cooperation with the League of Arab States, the UNESCO MIL Alliance, the UNITWIN MILID Network, and the MIL Institute, the conference brings together governments, academia, civil society, youth leaders, and international organizations in a truly multistakeholder environment.

A Dual Platform for Policy and Research

The 2026 edition integrates two mutually reinforcing components: the MIL Global Policy Forum and the International Scientific Congress on Media and Information Literacy. Together, these platforms aim to advance a coherent international agenda that connects public policy, academic research, technological innovation, and civic engagement.

MIL Global Policy Forum: AI for Peace and Global Understanding

The MIL Global Policy Forum will provide a high-level space for strategic dialogue on the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence on communication ecosystems, democratic governance, intercultural relations, and human security. In an era marked by disinformation, polarization, and rapid technological change, the Forum seeks to foster multilateral cooperation and human-centred approaches to AI governance.

Through ministerial panels, policy dialogues, multistakeholder roundtables, and strategic consultations, participants will explore how MIL can strengthen societal resilience, promote ethical and transparent algorithmic governance, and encourage digital citizenship grounded in global solidarity. Key thematic areas include peace education in AI-mediated societies, AI and social cohesion, governance and accountability of algorithmic systems, and innovation aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals.

International Scientific Congress: New Challenges in MIL Research

Complementing the policy discussions, the International Scientific Congress offers an inclusive and rigorous academic platform for presenting cutting-edge research, theoretical developments, and methodological innovations in Media and Information Literacy. All submissions will undergo peer review by an International Scientific Committee, ensuring high academic standards and global representation.

The Congress invites contributions across a broad range of research tracks, including MIL in formal and informal education, youth and digital cultures, democracy and civic engagement, intercultural and interfaith dialogue, epistemological and methodological approaches in MIL studies, and governance, regulation, and public service media. By bringing together scholars from diverse disciplines and regions, the Congress aims to deepen the evidence base supporting MIL as a framework for democratic resilience and peaceful coexistence.

Key Dates and Participation Opportunities

The deadline for abstract submissions is 31 March 2026, with notifications communicated on a rolling basis, typically within two weeks of submission. The final program will be published on 20 April 2026, and the conference will take place from 27 to 29 April 2026 in Cairo. The extended submission period has been designed to facilitate broad international participation.

The conference welcomes a wide range of contribution formats, including academic papers, research posters, case studies, policy briefs, workshops, youth-led initiatives, community-based MIL projects, creative and artistic works, and technological prototypes integrating AI and MIL applications. Selected contributions will be considered for inclusion in the official peer-reviewed Conference Proceedings.

Participation is open to all. Registration is free of charge, both for general attendees and for participants presenting academic or professional contributions. Contributors will benefit from full access to all sessions, inclusion in the official academic programme, a certificate of presentation, and eligibility for publication consideration.

A Global Invitation

At a time when Artificial Intelligence is reshaping societies and information ecosystems worldwide, the III MIL & Global Understanding Conference 2026 stands as a timely and strategic initiative. By connecting policy innovation, scientific research, and civic engagement, the conference underscores a powerful message: peace in the digital age requires ethical technologies, informed citizens, and resilient democratic institutions.

Researchers, policymakers, educators, communication professionals, technologists, students, and community leaders are invited to join this international gathering in Cairo. The conversation on peace, understanding, and responsible digital transformation continues—and participation from across regions and disciplines will be essential to shaping its future.
